Though his face remained red after suffering the indignity of having to be physically extracted from the spooky tree, John still laughed about it when Finn and Rob told Benedictine about it back at their table.

"One of my more mature moments," he said, winking at Finn. "But how many people can claim they got stuck in a plastic tree with a cute redhead, huh?"

Finn winked back.

"I'm so jealous," Benedictine drawled sarcastically, though she, too, winked at Finn. She gave her husband a mock glare. "Why didn't we ever get stuck in a plastic tree together?"

Rob feigned ignorance. "We don't want to traumatize the girls?"

John chuckled. He looked at Finn speculatively, still smiling, before standing up. "I'll be right back, kid. Stay here, okay?"

Confident that John Stonebrook wasn't running away because he was upset, Finn nodded. "Okay." After watching the detective thread his way through the picnic tables and out the dining room, Finn turned to his new friends. "So where is he going?"

"Maybe the restroom?" Rob palmed his thinning scalp. "You guys sure looked funny with your legs sticking out of that thing. I can't believe you convinced him to try climbing in. Stone never struck me as the playhouse type."

"Well, there's a first time for everything," Benedictine declared cheerfully. "I haven't seen him laugh like that in years." She leaned on her forearms on the picnic table. "So have you and Stone made plans to move in together, yet?"

"Honey!"

"It's a legitimate question," Benedictine huffed. "I'm just curious. I imagine Stone's already asked you to move in, right?"

Finn shrugged. "We talked about it a little bit. Mostly we talked about living with Jeremy. He's my roommate," Finn explained to Rob. "It's my duty to keep him safe."

"Jeremy, huh?" Benedictine looked away but not before Finn glimpsed her troubled expression. "How is he lately?"

A funny feeling danced through Finn's stomach, though he wasn't sure he liked it. "Jeremy's great. He's very fond of John." The strange feeling grew and Finn shifted uneasily on the bench. "We're all going to live together and be a family."

The smile Benedictine turned on him was forced and filled with a strange sympathy, as if she knew something bad that he didn't. "And what about Jack? How does he feel about moving in with Stone?"

Jack. He was the last person Finn wanted to think about, but Benedictine was right: if Jeremy came, then Jack came too. "Jack won't be a problem," he stated, holding her gaze to show her his seriousness. "When Jeremy is left alone or when he gets bored, Jack comes out. But if we all live together that won't happen. Jeremy will be happy. He'll be safe. And if he is, John will have nothing to worry about."

"Jack is a tricky situation," she said.

"He won't be a problem," Finn repeated confidently. "When Jeremy's happy, Jack stays away."

"I hope you're right, because Stone is like my brother." The mood at the table deepened, the screaming children and bright music fading from Finn's consciousness. This had become an interview of sorts, and he didn't want to mess it up.
